The single most important question in your entire life is the one about the new birth. Have you been born again? Nothing else in this life is as important as answering that question correctly. As the Bible lets us know, we came into this world with nothing and we will leave with nothing. How you answer that question determines eternity for you.
The term, you must be born again, was used by Jesus when talking to Nicodemus in the Gospel of John, Chapter 3, verse 3. Even though some in the media have mocked and belittled this term in the last 20 years or so, it is nevertheless as valid today as it was when Jesus said it in the garden. The term confused Nicodemus and he asked Jesus how could this be accomplished. Jesus explained that flesh gives birth to flesh and the Spirit of GOD gives birth to the human spirit. Hence being born again or the second birth. You must be born of flesh and of the Spirit. Once you are born physically and reached the age of accountability, you must then have a second spiritual birth to receive forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Please read the entire 3rd chapter of the Gospel of John for the full interaction between Nicodemus and Jesus that night.
To further explain the new birth or being born again, we must go back to the first book in the Bible, Genesis. In Genesis 3 we have the story of how the devil lied to and deceived Eve. GOD had told Adam and Eve not to eat of one certain tree in the midst of the garden or they would die. The devil told them they would not die, they would be like GOD. Now we are not sure of the exact thing Adam and Eve did here except to say they disobeyed the Word or command of GOD which is a sin.
Sin is what causes us to be separated from a holy GOD. Anything we do that is against what GOD's Word, the Bible, teaches us is a sin. Sin results in separation from GOD which is spiritual death. Adam and Eve did not die immediately however, at least not physically, but their sin did separate them from GOD spiritually which again is spiritual death. Contrary to what most people in the world think, GOD is not as concerned with our physical life as HE is with our spiritual life. Jesus did not go to the cross and die so we could live longer physically here on earth, but so we could have eternal spiritual life with GOD. In that eternal spiritual life HE has promised us a new body, one that will not age or decay in heaven forever.
Being born again means we have realized we are sinners, we have decided to turn away from our sin (repentance), and we have asked GOD through Jesus to forgive us and save us. If we are sincere, our human spirits will be cleansed from the stain of our sins by the blood of Jesus, the Christ and we are forgiven. Having been cleansed we are put back into a relationship with a Holy GOD, which is the new birth, or being born again.
Someone said if you are born once, physical birth, you will die twice, physical death and spiritual separation from GOD forever, which is spiritual death. This is the second death as mentioned in Revelations several times. See Revelations 2:11, 20:6, and 21:18 for further references concerning the second death. If you are born twice you die only once, a physical death. Then at some point in the future, GOD promises to resurrect those who have been born twice, to live with HIM forever.
